Colonial Protégé

Down from the plane
It dawns on me,
I'm here at last —
"Land of the Free".

Back home they clapped
And promised me,
"We'll never be
As great as thee."

I think of those
Ahead of me,
Who in their day
Arrived by sea,

The object of
Their study be:
To screw our people
Lovingly…
